Panda starts at the beginning with office system organization and integration — setting menus, pricing, and discounts; handling interfaces to the schools, to the enrollment and attendance systems, and to other administrative functions; determining eligibility and periodic eligibility verification; and application processing and all letter-generation functions. Panda Software automatically generates all information for state and federal reimbursement reports.

The point of sale operation at both the elementary and secondary school levels is handled by those respective modules. Each student’s eligibility is verified and each meal service transaction is processed and recorded. This includes service of meals, cash and pre-payments, student lookups and other meal service functions. The system also checks for second service or multiple improper use of the student ID for meal service.

At the end of each day, all pertinent point of sale information is uploaded to the district office, including meals served, cash received, cash expected, etc. Any new or updated student information is then downloaded to each school. The idea is that students eat at their correct eligibility every day.

The Panda Software system is designed to operate in a variety of environments. The interface from Panda Software to the schools and to the source of the enrollment and attendance information can be by modem or as part of the district, local or wide-area network. Identification of the student can be through means of a bar coded ID card, bar coded roster, magnetic strip ID card, keypad entry of the student ID number by alpha lookup or any combination. In the future, fingerprint identification will also be available.
